He is vice-chairman of the City of Wilmington Planning Commission (serving on the subdivision review board and the unified development ordinance oversight committee) and a DARE board member. He serves on both the Porters Neck Architectural Control and Lock-wood Folly Architectural Standards committees.

Mr. Saulnier is currently building his personal home on the Cape Fear River, by Snow's Cut. He described the two-story modular home as a basic, simple design. Its 10-foot deep, wrap-around porches are reminiscent of old-time beach cottages. While he doesn't have one favorite style of architecture, he is partial to Georgian and Craftsman. (His least favorite is Victorian.)

"I don't like a lot of embellishment, or excessive decorative features," he said.
